  1. After yesterday’s lecture I have come to realize that identity is not just about where you come from, your likes and dislikes or your interests but it is also about the security and sense of identity we receive from others around us. A person’s identity is not completely created in isolation. We do not have self-realized options of ourselves. We use the perceptions of ourselves to determine whether or not we are shy, can dance or are kind to others. These parts of our identity are determined by our observations of and interactions with others. Are you snobby? Beautiful or ugly? sociable? Good or bad at playing video games? And how do you know? These questions can be answered only by looking at those around us. Thus, identity is heavily influenced by the process of social comparison. Social comparison happens when we learn about our abilities and skills, about whether our opinions are appropriate or valid and about our relative social status by comparing our own attitudes, beliefs and behaviors with those of others. These comparisons can be with people who we know and see on a regular basis, with those that we see on TV or with anyone else we view as important. However, the most meaningful comparisons we make are with those we see as similar to ourselves. Answers to questions such as “What top should I wear to the interview?” or “What kind of music should I play at the funeral?” are the result of using the behavior and opinions of others as a basis of comparison. I believe that social comparison plays a much bigger part in the way in which we form our identities than we thought!

After the lecture I have come to realise that Identity is ones perception of themselves, adopting certain characteristics that they relate to most from their beliefs ,culture and even from the people they surround themselves with. Identity is an important aspect as it determines who or what a person is aswell as who or what they want to be perceived as.

  5. After yesterdays lecture I have come realize that identity is one of the fundamental elements that forms part of who we are or it draws us closer to the true self. Our family and the environment we grow up are the first contributors to our identity as we are consistently surround by certain conditioning and as we grow up we get to choose what forms part of our identity keeping in mind the influences of the world. Identity to me is all by choice, you get to choose who you are and what you stand for no matter where you are and whatever situation you are in. It is also knowing which traditions/cultures to continue that were pasted down to you by your primary family, friends and environments you are exposed to.

  6. After today lecture I realised that identity was something that represents who you are .where it be your hair , you clothes even the kind of shoes you wear. Your identity is who you feel you are inside and that is your way of showing who you are inside. Your identity is your way of showing someone how your identify yourself, its how you see yourself. For example if wearing your hair straight makes your feel like that style best represents exactly who you are how your feel then that is how you would like to identify yourself. Your identity can change over time or it just stays the same.

After yesterday’s lecture I have come to realise that identity is who you are , it is the way you think about yourself , the way you are viewed by the world and the things that define you as a person .It is also your beliefs, personality and looks such as the type of clothes that we wear to describe as ourselves and it is as our values and choices that we make in life that is part of our identity and how you interact with other people . As you grow older your identity does start to change because of the people that you surround yourself with and the environment that you are in, you’re not always going to be the same person.

  8. After yesterday’s lecture i have come to realise that identity is knowing where you come from and realising how many people before you suffered to have the freedom you enjoy today. In the past, people were oppressed to extreme conditions and that they had been stripped of their beliefs and opinions and taken from their countries to work under constraint conditions for other people’s benefits. Their identities were changed as they were tajken away from their norm and everyday lives and put under intense circumstances. As for the word identity, that didn’t exist back then. People were given identities that were not their and changed into their “leaders” where they were to be worked in hard conditions and under intense labour and even sold in the end. This was my view on yesterday’s lecture.

  12. After yesterdays lecture I have come to the realization that identity influences your morals, beliefs as well as your perspective. As you have adopted a culture which was imposed upon you through either direct or indirect forms of slavery. Our morals and values are defined by the communities and the culture in which we find ourselves, hens that slavery would have changed the perspective of those who were affected by it. Although we have freedom of choice the way we choose is based on our surroundings, our culture and social circumstances etc. Thus the identity of everyone affected by the slave trade has played an important role in shaping the fabric of the African society today.

After the discussion in class yesterday I have realised that identity is recognised in three stages, one being given to you by your parents or family. They say society is made up by a group of families. When you are young you get informed or taught what kind of child your parents expect you to be. When you grow up you do not forget those lessons. The second stage of identity you get in school. In school you are taught about your identity through historical events that link to similar background as yours and through those events you compare how much you see yourself or family values that have been passed down to you by your parents. The third stage is when you grow up as a young adult. When you try to infuse your own values with what your parents and school has taught you.
For example, if you grew up in a Christian home you will grow up as a Christian and later on in life you will choose your own religion. Identity is how you relate to your reality and where you see yourself in the future. I.e. one might say that they are a designer but in actuality they are studying design, but the way they are identifying themselves is what they see in the future.

  15. For me identity is a clear and more vivid description of one individual. Each and everyone of us has an identity and to me it goes to a point where it feels like we are being treated as objects since they have a barcode and us humans have an identity number. In this generation having an identity is an essential tool to keep up with life because one without an identity wouldn’t benefit from anything provided by the government and is seen as a ghost.

Whether the challenges made me stronger or weaker, it made me who I am today. Identity is the thing about me that makes me unique, my own person. My identity is based on what I want for the future, what I’m doing in the present and what I’ve done in the past. The choices I made in the past is what has built my character because of learning from my experiences and this eventually set my principles for the present and past. Identity is m mind set. My identity is who I chose to be after my experiences. My identity can be changed for the good if I’m willing, it can be influenced by the people around me and it can be influenced by opportunities.. To me, that is Identity.

Also, where you come from and where you belong. It is the way you dress, the way you present yourself, what you like and what you are interested in. Your identity is who you are as an individual person and it’s what separates you from other people.

  18. After the lecture we had in class I have come to realize that identity is both who we are on the surface, who we display ourselves as through what we wear, what music we listen to, and through our manner of speech etc., as well as who we truly are on the inside. To many, the outward appearance matters more than the inward, and to others it is vice versa. I would like to raise the fact that both are simultaneously important as your outward ‘appearance’ is merely a reflection of your inward appearance if you are true to who you are.

  21. Identity a is an expression of who you are as a person, determined by your self worth and value. Many factors play a role in your identity, your race ,ethnicity, religion, beliefs, gender , the way you dress, behave , and react to situations. For me, your personality influences your identity the most. Your personality is a combination of your characteristics or qualities you uphold and forms your character, your personality remains fairly consistent from a young age to an adult, and generally improves as we age and mature. Thus your identity is a expression of your personality.

  22. To me identity is who you are and the values and morals you live by. Your identity isn’t always your history because that doesn’t define you. For example if you had a parent who was abusive it doesn’t mean that you will turn out to be the same. Only you choose whether to let it define you or not. I say this because your history could be your culture and ancestors and all their accomplishments that they have made and you probably take pride in that. So you can proudly let your history define but you can also just scrap it entirely

  27. After yesterday’s lecture, I have come to realize that identity is a slightly complex topic and multi-faceted. The perspective taught does seem logical and practical when you have to think of childhood and upbringing, for instance knowing your family background, counting the number of languages you speak, looking at the colour of your skin etc- all these contribute to identity and I guess give a guide to where you fit in the world… This, however, does seem to limit your way as you grow up in the world, through the years I have come to believe that as much as identity may be formed from a root system and the world judges us based on that, we do have the ability to explore and change our identity when learning to know about who it is that created us in the first place. Where it all began… Personally, I invest more of my time, thinking and learning about Him rather than me. This in effect makes me discover who I truly am- my real identity.

Not everyone can have the same likes and hobbies as you do so there’s things are the things that makes you unique. You are beautifully and wonderfully made and there can never be another one like you.

  34. What is Identity
Identity is the fact of “who” or “what” a person is. Also Gender Identity forms an important part in psychology, dictates to how one views oneself both as a person and in relation to other people. There are also other aspects of identity such as racial, religious, ethnic etc. It is also the qualities, beliefs, personality, looks of a person or group. There is also synomyms for the word Identity such as recognition, naming, specification.

  35. After yesterdays lecture I realized that identity is shaped by where you come from and/or personal experiences. My identity was built on what I’ve experienced and by whom I’ve surrounded myself with, being able to see and make decisions on whether some things are for you, and what you do about it and how you react to it, is who you are and who you become.

As beings, we are constantly evolving psychologically, and emotionally. So our identities evolve along with everything else, we are constantly changing.

I believe our country has a serious identity crisis of who “we” were and who we are meant to be. Don’t forget the fight..but don’t forget the path has been opened for us, and it is time we pave this path and find our new identity as a country and clear the dust for others to see where we’re going.

The point is, the decisions you’ve made, make you who you are today and the decisions you make today make you who you will become tomorrow.

Yes people can say you are this and that but its only you who can sharpen contradictions raising from the matter of identity about you.

  37. Identity is both a simple and complicated topic to explore within a discussion due to all that it may encompass. For me personally, it’s something that’s been given to us even before we take our first breath and it’s something which forms itself both naturally and with our own choices over the course of our life. Its our name, the texture of our hair, our morals and beliefs. Its who we aspire to become, the choices we make and the events that happen which may have been out of our control. It’s a tool we use to navigate our life, a way of the world making sense of us and distinguishing us from another and sometimes can be used against us. Some people are proud of their identity while others may be having a tough time accepting things about their identity. I believe all these many different things form a identity.
